Wingtip over Los AngelesCars, Cars
Everywhere Cars
in Southern California

I've resigned myself to seriously contemplating the necessity of buying a car for graduate school at University of California San Diego. As much as I don't even want to consider it, the lack of quick, cheap public transit in southern California makes getting around on bus almost out of the question. And biking on highways is also out.

It is the shame of this nation that good public transport is limited to a few cities. California at the very least should have high-speed rails cutting commute times and pollution in and between cities. Instead, we have Amtrak. I still say, better service in China and Bangladesh.

Now to see a bit more of San Diego before heading back to LA. At least the view on the surfliner is nice, even if the track is so bad that we're limited to speeds of 30 MPH.

Comments:
Is it track conditions or conditions placed on the railroad by the actual owner of the line that limit the speed? From AA to Chicago, there is only a short segment that Amtrak owns where they haul ass; freight lines own the rest of the rails and cap the train at around 60 MPH IIRC.

I hope I can come visit you in SoCal some time. You really should try to make it to The City (i.e., NYC) some time and chill. It is the center of the universe, after all. ;)
Hey Scott,

The actual track conditions limited the train for part of the trip. The train was also slow because Amtrak had an agreement with someone else to pick up passengers at extra stops. I couldn't make out the reason why because the announcer's voice was garbled.

I hope I can come to NYC and you to Cali too!
Unfortunately you may have to submit to the machine to some extent since you'll be in SoCal. As lovely as it may be, SoCal is definitely a textbook case of urban sprawl and they love their cars there.

Congratulations on the grad school acceptance!

quite right, my friend. either i buy a car or i end up waiting two hours for the bus sometimes like i did last weekend. San Diego certainly isn't designed for the carless. see you in michigan? i'll be there before too long.
